Among the 2018 things we’ll remember…Badger Football

What a year!  It started with a big win over Joshua 56-29, a preview of what was to come from an explosive offense. Then it was Lago Vista and they did it again with a 42-7 win. The third game was a test against Lorena where the Leopards came out on top 35-14 and suddenly you weren’t so sure.

Now the Badgers had to face La Vernia, state ranked and looking really scary. The Badgers showed they could play with anybody. The game went into overtime! The Badgers lost it by an amazing 51-50. Fans got their money’s worth and you had to believe in the Badger team now.

Next was Gatesville, another loss, we wondered why, but now on to district play. First up, Burnet, fell against the explosive Badger offense 56-7. Then Liberty Hill, with top state rankings and the eventual state runner up. Lampasas fell by a 55-27 score, but that was closer than any district team would get to them, and it was the only district game Lampasas would lose.

The Badgers went on, beating Taylor, Canyon Lake, and Fredericksburg and finishing as district runner up behind Liberty Hill. On to the playoffs against Brazosport and the Badgers won it, the Bi-District Championship.

Next up, Lampasas was to meet La Vernia again in the Area game. It was close, Lampasas played heads up with the Leopards until the end, but it was to end 28-21 and the season was over.

At season’s end the Badger team was recognized with honors well-deserved. Ace Whitehead, our left handed sophomore QB, with 3,000 yards in the air and 35 TDs was awarded the All-District MVP, quite an accomplishment for a sophomore player.

First Team All-District honors went to sophomore running back Jack Jerome, junior receivers Cameron Everts and Jalon Porter, offensive lineman Austin Kielpinski, senior linebacker Landon Irvin, junior defensive lineman Duston Engdahl and junior defensive back Kobe Allen.

Second team all district team members were lineman John Long, junior defensive end Ethan Rascoe and junior defensive back Clayton Bever.

What a season! But even better, look at how many of these top players will return next year!
