Lampasas 49 Fredericksburg 47 The regular season ends with Lampasas a solid number two in District 14-4A and Playoffs bound.
The football game in Badger Stadium last night was as good as it gets. There was so much action by so many parts and players involved that the detail is impossible to adequately describe in this small space. Here are the high spots:
Lampasas came out in the first half to dominate the field. The Badger defense shut down the Billy offense and the first TD of the game was scored by Clayton Bever who scooped up a high snap on a Billy punt and ran it in. Case Brister intercepted a Billy pass and ran it in 27 yards for a TD. The Badger offense then sent Cameron Everts 71 yards for a TD and suddenly the Billys were down21-0.
It went on until, at the end of the first half, Lampasas was ahead 35-13, a commanding lead.
Fredericksburg came out of the locker room for the second half and it was a different story. The Billys came alive and began to score on almost every possession. Lampasas offense was still potent, but Fredericksburg would answer and then some.
By the 4th quarter, it was so close. The key play of the game was a Billy TD in the 4th that had cut the Badger lead to 42-33. Instead of kicking the extra point to hold Lampasas to an 8 point lead, the Billys tried for 2 on a pass play that was intercepted by Clayton Bever. That left the Billys behind by the difficult 9 points
The scoring went on and with 1:27 left in the game and Lampasas barely hanging on to a 49-47 lead, the Badgers faced a 4th and one foot to seal the victory. Ace Whitehead kept for a QB sneak and picked up the 1st down to seal the victory.
We have to say, Fredericksburg played so strong and determined, and so well in this close game…we have to feel sorry for them. They finish in 5th place in district and don’t get to go to the playoffs. They seemed better than that!
Here’s the way it ends in district:
Liberty Hill 5-0
Canyon Lake 3-2
Lampasas goes to the playoffs
Next Friday the Lampasas Badgers will be at Bryan High School at Merrill Green Stadium at 3310 Oak Ridge Drive. There, at 7:30pm, they will play in the Bi-district round of the Playoffs against Brazosport.
Lampasas will be the visiting team.
