The annual influx of hunters has, in truth, already begun. Many of the hunters came in for the bow season which opened Sept. 29th and goes up to Nov. 2nd, or the Early Youth-Only Season which was on last Saturday and Sunday to give the kids a head start, and of course the Dove Season is still on, going through this Sunday.
But, we especially celebrate the big arrival of the hunters this week for the General Season for deer hunting. That opens on Saturday morning at daylight and continues thru Jan. 6th, 2019.
The most noticeable day will be Friday, when hunters will be coming into the local HEB for groceries and Key Avenue will be busy with pickups and trailers loaded with deer stands and feeders and ATVs, and camouflage will be the principal clothing of the day.
The Chamber of Commerce will be manning tents in the west end of the HEB parking lot, filled with volunteers sacking up BBQ sandwich lunches for the visiting hunters. And, many locals and businesses are taking advantage of the opportunity to have the same sack lunches delivered by some of the volunteers. That event should be starting up about 10 or 11am when the BBQ comes off the pit.
Lampasas Radio will be there with a live broadcast as we visit with hunters and local business people.
On Saturday, Lampasas Radio and partner Hoffpauir Ranch and Supply will be holding the annual Big Buck Contest at the Hoffpauir Ranch location on Hwy 281, just north of town. We have prizes for several categories with the best of it being a ton of deer corn for the best buck.
Judging with a modified Boone & Crockett system will be Mike Billington, one of the premier taxidermist in Texas.
