Cinco de Mayo

Today is Cinco de Mayo, (the 5th of May) which celebrates the Mexican army’s 1862 unlikely victory over French troops at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican war that was raging about the same time as our Civil War in the U.S.

Peculiarly enough, most people in Mexico ignore the holiday, while it has become a big deal in the U.S., even though most Americans don’t really know what it was all about...except it’s a good reason for a party or a trip to the local Tex-mex restaurant with salsa, tacos, margaritas and plenty of cerveza. And, if you’re working today, there’s another chance to celebrate as the Fiesta Winery on 580 W between Nix and Bend is having a Cinco de Mayo party on the Seis de Mayo (Saturday) at the winery. Just head west on 580, you’ll find it on the left.

Anyway, Happy Cinco de Mayo! See ya there.
