Zefrin L. Kocian, 87, of Lampasas, Texas passed away on Monday, May 29, 2017. Funeral Services will be held at 10am, Thursday, June 1, 2017, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Cop-peras Cove, Texas with burial following with full military honors at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be at 5pm on Wednesday with a Rosary at 6:30 at Scott's Funeral Home of Copperas Cove.
Zefrin was born in Lavaca County, Texas to Jim and Stella Koncaba Kocian on August 10, 1929. He was raised on a farm within a family of three brothers and three sisters. He was a devout
Catholic and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He married Mary Salas on January 25, 1958, and was blessed with seven children. Early in life, Zefrin worked at various jobs, which included farm work, short order cook, ranch labor, oil field worker, and railroad laborer, before joining the US Army in 1948.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from the US Army in September 1970 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. After retiring from the US Army, Zefrin attended the Police Academy at Texas State Technical Institute in Harlingen, Texas. He was a police officer in LaFeria and Georgetown, Texas and a campus police officer at Southwestern University. He later worked at Ft. Hood, Texas for six years, retiring in 1990. He lived the rest of his life in Lampasas County, devoting his time to the Catholic Church. Zefrin was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary Kocian.
Zefrin is survived by his seven children, Lawrence Kocian and wife Ruth, Zefrin Kocian, Cedric Kocian and wife Martha, Rowena Maas and husband Bill, Veronica Creek and husband Tommy,
Merida Frank and husband Lance, Yolanda Turk and husband Rob; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Holy Family Catholic Church or the Knights of Columbus (St. Vincent de Paul at Holy Family Catholic Church), 1001 Georgetown Road, Copperas Cove, TX 76522. Scott's Funeral Home of Copperas Cove is in charge of the arrangements.
