Even though it seems that summer just began, many young athletes are already preparing for sports next year. Summer athletic camps starting today include the SWAT Program at the High School Field, starting at 8am; the Volleyball Camps for grades 4-6 at 8:30am and for 7-8 at 12:30pm and Basketball Camp for High School at 5pm today and for Middle School at 5:30pm on Tuesday.

The last series of 7 on 7 games takes place in Marble Falls, starting at 6pm today.

The camps may be an opportunity to meet new LHS coaches as there are lots of changes this year.

A new Volleyball Coach is Denise Ponder, a 6-year assistant coach at Killeen that is coming to Lampasas this year to take over the local program. That will allow Jenny Bowden, who had to take over the volleyball program as an extra task last year, to concentrate her efforts on her Basketball program.

Many local HS baseball and softball players are involved in summer leagues, both locally and in out-of-town leagues.

They will have new programs at Lampasas High when their late summer make-ready starts.

A new baseball coach, Shane Doege, is coming to LHS from Hutto, where, as an assistant coach, he helped the Hippos to a share of the District 17-5A championship.

Doege has been a coach for 16 years and has had teams qualify for playoffs 13 times. He has been head coach at Hillsboro, Covington and Wortham.

He comes to Lampasas as the 5th head baseball coach in 7 years, as Coach Manny Perez leaves for Pearland.

A new softball coach, Drew Cleavinger, will be replacing Chris Munoz as head softball coach for 2016-17. She will be the Lady Badgers’ 5th head coach in 8 years.

Cleavinger leaves her hometown of Coahoma, where she spent a year as head softball coach. She also led Comanche in 2015 to the state semifinals.

As a player in Coahoma, she helped her team get to the state tournament 3 times.
