Badger Varsity Football (1-6) lost to LaVega last night 45-26. Lampasas Radio broadcaster Darryl Brooks saw it this way:
The Lampasas Badgers fell to 0-3 in district in a 45-26 loss to the undefeated La Vega Pirates (8-0, 3-0). The Pirates struck early on the first play of the game with a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown after only 13 seconds of play. Trailing 45-14 at the start of the 4th quarter, the Badgers kept fighting as they marched 62 yards to cut the lead to 45-20. The touchdown was a demonstration of Badger determination when Nathan Keese and a Pirate defender fought for the pass for what seemed like several minutes before Keese pulled the ball away from the defender to secure the touchdown. After recovering an onside kick, the Badgers reached the end zone again on a 7-yard touchdown run by Cohen Cockburn to the cut the lead to 45-26. On the ensuing kickoff, the Badgers again recovered an onside kick and seemed to be in business. But on the first play from scrimmage, the Pirates intercepted a Harrison Gillespie pass to secure the win.
The most exciting play of the night occurred at the end of the second half. With 7 seconds left on the clock, Cockburn tossed up a hail-Mary to the end zone. At first glance it appeared to be intercepted, but when the play was over, Jason Murphey was standing in the end zone with the football.
