We got the blues too!

The usual core crowd of area music lovers were at the AmVets Hall last night to hear the pop Texas Country tunes of J.D. Newbury—including his current single “Beer Makes You Lean.”

That happened, and more, as J.D. brought with him three more musicos that hailed from around the state. J.D. comes from Nacogdoches but the slide guitar player, Joe Felini, who is also quite a vocalist and song-writer, is from Austin. Joe used to be in the same band as Lampasas-born Donnie Price, the bass player and guitarist who lives at Marble Falls…so Donnie showed up and joined in. The mouth-harp, guitar playing T-Goznee Thornton from San Angelo is also a friend and partner from way-back of Joe F. and he drove up for the show. Joe and T-Goz were a hoot! They’re country players but for some reason like to do blues music when they get together so…when they got a chance to enter a “showdown” for new blues players they entered. Funny thing is the duo kept winning and wound up at a nationals in Memphis and from 250-plus entries they came in second-place. Not bad-they thought, for a couple of country pickers.

One of the highlights of Wednesday evening was the wailing blues music with mouth harp and slide guitar from these two guys. Wow!!

All of this was pulled together by the 4th member of last night’s show, Richard Sutton of Livingston. Richard is, in his words, an old “roadie.” Originally from Austin he spent years running up and down the road with George Jones. “I took care of him doing the shows, and his business…I even fed his cows.” Richard’s music connections started in Austin in the old days and he has stories to tell about Willie and Jerry Jeff and Fromholz and more. During last night’s show Richard did harmony for everybody and delighted the crowd with his “animated” style.

As is often the case, everybody that showed up for the Wednesday Up Close and Personal  show got a real treat. Next Wednesday will feature Steve Hines from 7-9pm at the AmVets Hall.
